Henrietta is a red speckled booted bantam and the ‘Mother Hen’ of the Backyard Farm. She uses her wisdom and knowledge to protect, educate and guide her flock, ensuring the survival of her young and all her family. She puts her heart and soul into her chicks, educating them and protecting them from any and all predators.
Like most good mothers, inwardly Henrietta always worries about her family whilst appearing calm and composed on the outside. Her two young chicks, Percy and Shelly, truly adore her. Her affection shows through, each and every day when teaching them what is good to eat and what is not. She also guides them to drink, rest, explore, perch, and roost. She even encourages them to take their baths, just like a human mum. And they learn what to fear from her too.
Chickens do not take baths with water and soap. Instead they take dust baths. This involves fluffing up their feathers with some dirt and using it to clean their bodies. It scrubs off dead skin cells and gets rid of oil build-up. This all helps to keep their feathers fresh and clean. Interestingly, if there is no dirt available for dust baths then chickens will still go through the motions. This is like taking a bath without water for humans.
